These are the Ways Your Congregation Can Join Greene County Habitat for Humanity

Become a Covenant Church

Covenant churches (and temples) agree to two commitments:

(1) Pray for the mission of Habitat for Humanity

(2) Include Habitat for Humanity in their budget.

In addition, a suggested expectation is that the churches try to find members for the HFH committees among their congregations.

Habitat will turn first to covenant churches for support as other needs arise. For example, covenant churches and temples recently served college students who came to Charlottesville to help during spring break. Additionally, several covenant churches have been providing meals at the work site.

Adopt a Habitat Home

Many individual churches, denominations, or community neighborhood churches have sponsored their own houses by providing financial and volunteer support to build it. Sending work crews of volunteers is not a necessity. A typical house takes 18 Saturdays to build. Some of the many benefits are:

• Working alongside the future homeowner family, and with other Habitat Partner families, serving together and growing in relationships with persons of other race, class, and faith.

• Building relationships by experiencing service together with members of one's own congregation and members of other congregations.

• Joining with other churches in a Circle of Faith that would share with you in the cost and provision of volunteers. Houses have been built by denominational groups, pairs of churches, or gatherings of churches in a neighborhood or district. This is a wonderful and time-tested way to bridge denominational and racial differences. Pulpit and choir "swapping" relationships between churches can grow out of these co-sponsorships.

• Providing a low-income working family the gift of building and owning their own home; changing their lives forever.

Full House Sponsorship: $60,000

Half House Sponsorship: $30,000

Quarter House Sponsorship: $15,000

Eighth House Sponsorship: $7,500

Single Saturday Sponsorship: Contribute $5,000 and send a crew of volunteers one Saturday.

Provide Volunteers: Recruit a group of volunteers, especially retirees, to work on our existing mid-week crews.

Provide A Team of Crew Leaders: Recruit 3 or 4 people with "handy-man" skills willing to be trained as crew Leaders. They would come out two or three times a year as a group to a site to provide side-by-side supervision with unskilled volunteers.

Provide Teams of Plumbers and Electricians: The most costly part of our labor is the provision of professional services. The provision of a small team of plumbers, electricians, and dry wall mudders would be extremely helpful.

Provide These Key Volunteer Positions: Volunteer Coordinators, Family Advocates or Lunch Providers for work crews on weekends and weekdays
