ANNUAL EVENTS
|
In an effort to fund our home construction projects and increase awareness of our mission in the community, Greene Habitat is involved in numerous events throughout each year. Some of these events, such as the Greene County Fair and the Battle of Stanardsville, are community events and we are merely participants, manning informational booths. Other events are run by area organizations and churches on our behalf and the proceeds are donated to us as a gift. However, we also run several large events each year, ourselves, in which we try to bring some quality entertainment to the area, all the while raising money and awareness.

In March, the Four Seasons retirement community plays host to our annual Casino Night in their beautiful and elegant clubhouse. In our first event in 2010, over 150 local residents came out to participate in the fun, which included craps, blackjack, roulette, 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. Entertainment for the evening came in the form of two local classically trained sopranos who performed live with piano accompaniment. Even Shaun Hayes, owner of the Blue Ridge Cafe, was on hand to cater the event.

Set on the stunningly beautiful Blue Ridge School campus in April, the Greene 5K is a trail race open to all ages and athletic levels. With few trail runs in Greene County the thing that makes our race special is the beautiful, scenic route that has been provided for us. The Blue Ridge School has a simply breath-taking campus and our course runs right through it. The race winds its way through a partially wooded single track complete with stream crossings, wide cinder style trails and then a hearty finish through the campus itself. It is a moderately challenging course but still friendly to any novice out there. The trails, normally used by the school's student population, meander through the foot hills of the Appalachian Mountains. T-shirts and refreshments are always provided and prizes are awarded in number of categories.

2010 will be the inaugural year for our chapter's largest annual event. HabtoberFest is one of the first music festivals of its kind in Greene County to feature all rock and hard-rocking country bands. Set in mid October, the festival has the blue ridge mountains in full autumn colors as its backdrop. Bands come from all over the area and even from places as far away as Rochester, New York to perform for Greene County residents.
